Europeans Have A Tremendous Interest In Foreign Languages

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

I’ve lived in Munich for the past five years, after having lived in the US and in Britain. An aspect of life in Germany which soon caught my attention was the widespread interest in foreign languages that exists here. Although German is still the most widely-used language, and one would have difficulties without a good knowledge of it, most Germans speak English well. In fact, English is taught to school children right from the first class, and there are a wide number of programs for preschool children. Most jobs also require a good knowledge of English. On Google, the search term Englisch receives an average of 5,000,000 searches each month from users in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

Although the Englischkurs is the most commonly sought after, other languages have a considerable following which not only includes well-known languages like French and Spanish, but also less-commonly studied ones like Icelandic and even Urdu. Opportunities to learn new languages are plentiful. Twice a year, the local adult education center publishes a list of classes the size of a phone book. Along with the various music classes, cooking classes, sports, and the like, are a wide variety of language classes. A lady whom I know who teaches English at this school tells me that the classes for basic English are mostly visited by Eastern European immigrants who didn’t get the chance to learn English as schoolkids and who are eager to learn the language, as a knowledge of English is so often wanted by employers. At the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, there are also a large number of language courses offered. The class schedule lists courses in Tamil and Czech for students who are majoring in Asian Studies or in Slavic languages. For the major languages like French and even Swedish, special courses are offered for students who aren’t majoring in Romantic Languages or Scandinavian Studies, and these courses have a large number of attendees. This helps to show the larger interest in languages here. In contrast, I don’t think that many students in the English-speaking world would take a foreign language course that wasn’t required in order to get the degree. The bookstores also have an extensive collection of materials for learning languages, which also includes exotic languages like Arabic and Thai. For the major languages, there is also an assortment of specialized dictionaries, such as English-German or German-French dictionaries for the terms used in biology, physics, and medicine.

This comparison reveals the fact that we could place more focus on languages in the English-speaking world. In order to get the Abitur, the German university entrance certificate, the student must have at least a good knowledge of three languages, and in some cases, the student can speak four. In most English-speaking countries, it’s possible for a PhD to have little or no knowledge of any foreign tongue. As a speaker of three languages, I think that one is missing out if one only has a knowledge of one language. A second language makes an additional world available to you. Even though English is widely spoken, without knowledge of a country’s language, one cannot read newspapers, understand radio and television programs, and one’s surroundings in general. A second language makes that world easier to examine and to comprehend, and also, to see more of the advantages which that second world has to offer.

Applying To Places Not Hiring: A Wise Move Or Not?

Applying to Places Not Hiring: A Wise Move or Not?

Are you in desperate need of a job? If you are currently unemployed or if you truly think that your current job is making you “crazy,” you may be. When it comes to finding a new job, especially in a hurry, there are many individuals who think that the more job applications they fill out or the more resumes they submit, the better their chances of finding a new job are. But, what about the employers who are currently not hiring? If you are wondering whether or not you should fill out a job application or submit your resume to a place that isn’t hiring, you are not alone.

When it comes to determining whether or not you should submit a job application or drop off your resume to a place that isn’t hiring, there are a number of important factors that need to be taken into consideration. Perhaps, the most important factor is if you know for sure they are not hiring. When it comes to filling out job applications, there are many applicants who try and determine, upfront, whether or not there are any positions available. If you happen to stop by a local business or call to ask about hiring and get a negative response, you may not want to submit an application anyways, especially if you gave your name. This tends to create a bad impression; an impression that states that you don’t necessarily listen to what you are being told.

Now, there is a difference between knowing in advance that a business isn’t hiring versus being told as soon as you go to turn in your job application or your resume. If you are told when you are submitting your resume or job application, it is advised that you ask about the future? Does the company representative that you are speaking with think that they will be doing any hiring in the future? If so, you may want to think about asking them to hang on to your job application or your resume for future use. In some states, employers are required to save all job applications and resumes for about a year. Of course, if the business in question later advertises the fact that they are hiring, you are advised against automatically assuming that your resume is still on file. You may want to call, just to make sure.

One of the few downsides to applying to places that aren’t necessarily hiring at the current moment is the timing. As it was previously mentioned, many employers are required to save any job applications or resumes that they receive for a period of time, like a year. This is nice because some employers decide to not even advertise the fact that they are hiring, instead many just go through the resumes or job applications that they accumulated overtime. The only problem is the overtime part. You may have submitted your application eight months ago and only end up getting a response now. If you are like many job seekers, you should be able to find a job in as little as a few weeks, sometimes a month or two at the most. That means that by the time your application or resume gets noticed, it may already end up being too late.

As a reminder, the decision as to whether or not you want to apply at a place that isn’t hiring is yours to make, but it is advised that you proceed with caution when doing so. If you are told that applications are not being accepted at the current time, even just to hang on to, you are advised to cut your loses and move on. The last thing that you want to do is create a scene or try to convince an employer to hang on to your application, as you may end up creating a bad name for yourself; one that may haunt you, you resume, or your job application for years to come.

Everything About Pet Friendly Hotels In Los Angeles – Everything Laid Out

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

When traveling with your pets, one of the most complex things to work out logistically is where you are going to stay that is going to be as pleased that your fur baby is staying with them as they are that you are staying with them. Pet friendly hotels in Los Angeles are on the rise, luckily, since Los Angeles is on the cusp of most movements, including the pet lover movement. Also, there are a lot of Los Angles travel deals that are available if you know where to look.

There are hotels all along the price spectrum that will welcome your animal with open arms, but it’s a little difficult to find them if you don’t know where to look. One good place to start is with travel wholesaling sites that allow you to hunt via criteria – you can tick off what amenities are essential to you. You can choose “Pet Friendly” and then only hotels which accept pets will be shown in your search results. However, no one’s database is foolproof, so you should always check with the particular hotel before booking to make sure that Rover or Princess will be a valued guest. Most hotels require pets be well-behaved – so if yours requires, for instance, boxer dog training you would want to look into that ahead of time. There are many affordable and easily obtained programs that teach you how to train your dog yourself, or you could look into a professional course through a local dog training academy.

One of the most reasonably priced chains to be in the category of not only pet friendly, but animal loving, is Motel 6. In fact, they publicize themselves as the lowest priced national chain. I have stayed at more than a few different branches on a number of different occasions with my dog, and we have had generally positive experiences. Of course, the accommodations are basic, with no additional amenities besides the what’s necessary, but it’s clean and comfortable, and the staff is always friendly and helpful.

On the other end of the cost – and luxury – scale is the W in Westwood. If you can afford to spend about ten times what it will cost you to stay in Motel 6, then you and your fluffy buddy can stay in the lap of luxury in one of the most elegant neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Near UCLA and all the hip and fun restaurants and entertainments of Westwood, you couldn’t ask for a more ideal accommodation in Los Angeles. Also, the close proximity to Santa Monica, the 405 and Sunset Boulevard make it a great location for visiting all different parts of this exciting and vibrant city.

So whether you are in town for vacation and the simple pleasure of visiting the City of Angels, or business such as an annual convention or meetings and presentations with potential clients, there are many places in LA that you can stay comfortably with your pets. With a little footwork and research, you can find the perfect hotel for both you and your furry traveling companion.

National Performance Awards After ISO 9000 Certification

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Once a organization achieves ISO 9001 2008 Certification, they start thinking what next?

As ISO 9004 is only a guidance for improvement and not a certification standard organizations look for other awards available to recognize themselves as quality conscious company to their customers.

Following awards can be pursued after ISO 9001. The basic principle for all these awards are more or less same but they give different emphasis to different perspectives of quality differently.

These award are:

1.The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award
2.European Quality Award
3.Canadian Quality Award
4.Deming Prize
5.Australian Quality Award

Indian Awards:

1. Golden Peacock National Quality Award
2. Rajiv Gandhi national Quality Award
3. QCI DL Shah Award

There are many more awards but before you apply for any of these awards ask these three questions to yourself:

1.Why do I want the company to have quality programs, processes and disciplines?
2.Do we have top-management commitment for spending time and resources to become customer focused, quality conscious, excellent company?
3.What are my companies true motives for completing the award application?

If your answers to these questions, respectively, are:

1.“to significantly improve customer, employee and stakeholder satisfaction”.
2. YES .
3. Continual improvement

than move ahead, else save money by not applying for the award.

Common Award Criteria

1.Leadership:Similar to Quality Management principle 2, ISO 9000:2005, Leadership, Leaders provide purpose and direction to the organization.
2.Planning:Similar to Quality Management principle 5 and 7, ISO 9000:2005,all activities should be done in a planned manner. Identify, understand and manage interrelated processes as a single system. Adopt factual approach to decision making.

4.Employees:Similar to Quality Management principle 3, ISO 9000:2005, Involvement of people, people at all levels are essence of the organization and their full involvement brings benefits for the organization.
5.Processes:Similar to Quality Management principle 4, ISO 9000:2005,a desired result can be achieved more efficiently if activities and related resources are managed as processes.
6.Suppliers:Similar to Quality Management principle 8, ISO 9000:2005,organization and suppliers are interdependent and mutually beneficial relationship helps in creating value.
7.Results:Similar to Quality Management principle 6, ISO 9000:2005, continual improvement in performance of the organization and its objectives.

This is just to show you that award criteria are similar to principles of quality management as given in ISO 9000: 2005 on which ISO 9001:2008 is based.

Though the requirements and efficiency and effectiveness required will be much higher than ISO 9001 certification.

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

In today’s job market you need to utilize every advantage you can to get your dream job. A Dynamic Web Resume will be able to express who you really are to a potential employer. I got this idea during my job hunt coming out of college. I felt like there was so much about myself that I couldn’t fit it on my 8 1/2″ x 11″ paper resume. You should feel the same way too! I had many great mentors, who are very successful in the business world that would meet with me to discuss my resume and other job related subjects. Everyone had a different opinion on what the best information is to put on your small amount of area that you have to promote yourself. Personally, I was a professional and collegiate athlete, one mentor would tell me to push that because employers will look at that as hard work, discipline, and that I have the ability to work with a group. While, other mentors would say that me wasting 4″ on athletics would be an indication that I am only experience in athletics and not the job at hand. I totally agreed with both sides. Therefore, I have eliminated the problem with Dynamic Web Resumes. The tabbed sections allow you to get so much more information onto your resume without cluttering it or forcing an employer to read something they are not interested in. If they don’t care about athletics or anything on the resume they don’t have to open that section. It’s that simple.

Home Selling

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

Selling a home is a very emotional process for all members involved. Once you embark on the process to sell your home. One of the tips I can give you is to start disconnect emotionally from your home and let yourself to mentally picture a new owner moving in. “no hard feelings needed here, after all the primary objective is to get the property sold and move on to your next home right?”.

When you are about to sell a house, it is suggested that you get your home valuated before putting it up for sale. There are many real estate agents that are willing to do this at no cost. Another way of increasing the value is by doing some modifications in the house. On the other hand, it is important to understand that not all changes that you have made in your home will boost the value of the house. For some, bright colored walls are eye-catching but for others, more neutral colors work better. Some will think that a walk out basement addition is a plus while others will think it is risky. When you are making modifications or improvements in your house, do so in the most neutral way that you possibly can. You should also keep it clean at all time, especially the kitchen and bathroom area. Have a professional cleaner come over and take care of it all at least once so that you can just maintain it. Don’t remove everything away and make your home look thin, but if you have crowded furniture, it might be a good idea to get start on your packing ahead of time. And don’t think you can put everything into an extra room or closet. A buyer is going to want to check those spaces too. If you really have a lot of things, consider renting storage space until your move is done. Do consult with real estate agents, for they are the best person to approach for suggestions. Real estate agents can offer guidance into the pros and cons of your home. By doing this, most improvements can be done without wasting too much time and money.

So the house is ready for sale and its time to meet some potential buyers. If you don’t have the time to meet them, you should hire appropriate real estate agent to do it. Ideally, the seller must have an expertise in the field of marketing, financing, negotiation and closing. The seller (the home owner) should be able to tell or explain some basics info about the house to buyers. You should have or prepare a good reason about why are you selling the house because buyers often ask that specific question. Do not reveal your motivations, or how low you’ll go on the price. That’s it for now and I hope this will give you more insight about selling a house.

Career Fair Job Hunting Tips

Career Fair Job Hunting Tips

Are you looking to find a new job or a new career? If you are, you may want to give career fairs a try, as they are a great way to not only find available jobs, but also acquire them.

As you likely already know, career fairs are large events where multiple employers come in search of qualified employees. In most cases, career fairs are held in public places, such as shopping malls or hotel lobbies. They are also often free to attend. While career fairs do vary, most employers are able to set up small booths, where they can display information about their company and the type of employees that they are looking for. Most employer booths have a company representative who is able to discuss their company’s opportunities and accept resumes.

Although career fairs are a great way to find new employment opportunities, most individuals are unprepared for them. What many do not realize is that some employers actually interview and hire candidates right on the spot! For that reasons, you need to do more than just attend a career fair; it is something that you need to prepare for. To make the most out of career fairs, you will want to keep some of the below mentioned tips in mind.

Perhaps, the most important tip to remember is to bring copies of your resume with you; the more the better. Although you may not be interested in apply for every opportunity found at a career fair, you should enter into a career fair thinking that you would. If you are able to get an estimated number of how many employers would be attending the career fair in question, you are advised to bring that number of resume copies. Should you not handout all of your resume copies, you can save them and use them at a later date. Career fairs are not only used to educate you on local employment opportunities, but they are also designed to help you find and get a job.

Another tip that you should keep in mind is your appearance. Since many career fair employer participants give interviews on the spot, you may want to be prepared for one, in the physical sense. Wearing a pair or jeans or sweat pants will not make a good impression, but a simple pants suit or dress will work wonders. Many times, the employer representatives at a career fair are the ones who in charge of the company’s hiring. Taking a few extra minutes to “fix yourself up,” before you walk out the door is a great way to make a good impression at a career fair.

As previously mentioned, many career fair employer participants end up giving interviews on the spot. In fact, some actually hire new employees right on the spot as well. That is why it is extremely important that you prepare for an interview, just in case. In addition to dressing the part, you also want to make sure that you know how an interview works, namely the questions that you should ask or the responses that you should give. If you haven’t had an interview in some time, it may be a good idea to refresh your memory. You can do this by asking a friend or a family member to give you a sample interview. Practice is the best way to make a good impression during an interview, even if it is an unexpected one at a career fair.

Another tip that is worth mentioning is going to career fairs alone. Most career fairs are scheduled during the daytime, often during the week. If you are a parent, you should make other arrangements for your child, as you don’t want to be remembered as the applicant who brought their child along. In terms of friends, you may also want to bring a friend along with you for moral support. You are also advised against doing this. If you have a friend is who also job hunting, you can attend together, but be sure to go your separate ways. Employers are less likely to give you an interview if they see you are accompanied by a guest and a partner may unintentionally effect which employers you stop and see.

By keeping the above mentioned tips in mind, you should be able to make the most out a career fair. These tips may increase your chances of walking away from a career fair with a new job.

Introductuon To TraVerus Travel & Lifestyles

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

My name is Christopher, and I live in Arlington VA, which is just outside Washington DC. I was born in Bangkok, Thailand. My Dad was in the Air Force at that time stationed in Laos. Although I was born normal, at 4 months of age I had Meningitis and Encephalitis. This caused brain damage which led to Cerebral Palsy. My family worked very hard with me to put me through school. I’ve lived in Germany, Miami, and Virginia. It wasn’t until we moved to Virginia that I was placed into a non-disabled school. I have normal intelligence and was a trail blazer in my school district. I even played drums from 6th grade through high school in the concert bands. I then attended Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA, where I majored in Speech Communications and wanted to go into Public Relations, but ended up in an International law firm in Washington DC as a Library Assistant. I’m there 10 years now.

My first introduction into Network Marketing was with a company called Equinox International, which sold everything from Water Filters to makeup worn by Ms. America in 1997. Equinox even sponsored the Ms. America Pageant that year! Although they won numerous awards, the company was shut down in 1998 by the Feds. Equinox was 6 years old. I had become slightly interested in travel industry in college and helping people book travel. After Equinox folded, I tried a correspondence travel program, but it got too expensive. I began searching on line for a travel company to work for and learn about the industry. Most wanted around $5,000 to join. After losing money with Equinox, well, you know how it goes.

I then started working at the law firm. A while later I came across a company called Travelworks International. It had a much lower entry cost, so I gave it a try. TI was the marketing arm for a brick and mortar agency called Travelworks. After listening to some conference calls, I knew I was in the right place, even though it was in its infancy. So I watched this company evolve. As it grew, cool things began happening: Celebrities became involved with TI, suppliers started gravitating towards us, and Governments from other countries started calling us to see how they could get involved with us. It soon became clear that we needed to brand ourselves. So our President, David Manning, changed our name to TraVerus Travel. And the rest, as they say, is history. TraVerus has 2 Internet radio shows, was invited to the 2006 Emmy Awards, where we gave 68 celebrities a week’s vacation worth $22,000 each! And now, we have come full circle, as we have brought the Travelworks agency under our umbrella.

If you have been looking for a good company to work with, I strongly encourage you to become a part of my TraVerus family. For more info, please go to traverus travel
