You would think this goes without saying but there are so many places to visit in Italy. Rome has to be the top spot. It is one of my favourite places in the world. It has everything. The first time I went it was for a day-imagine, what can you do in Rome in one day? The next time it was for five days, much better.

On my Italian bargain city breaks I stayed in a hotel on the Vatican side of the river and for me the location was perfect. I don’t suppose anyone goes to Rome without visiting St.Peter’s and whatever your purpose: religious , lover of art or history , it is there. It is also worth going to the top for the view over Rome and the view from the gallery half way up. Also, the Vatican museum and the Cistine Chapel are must visits. It is just not possible to describe how amazing these places are. You just have to go. It is worth the queue so go early. There are audio guides available and you must have your passport or they will not let you have one. It is a good idea to plan in advance what your priorities are as you will not see the whole thing in one visit. For instance I had been to Egypt so I gave that room a miss.

There are the usual hop on hop off tours which are always a good way to get your bearings as it will make your Rome cheap breaks easier to plan. I tended to walk everywhere, it gives you a good feel of the atmosphere and you see things you would otherwise miss, but the bus is quicker.There are self guided walking tours which go to all the main points of interest including the Trevi Fountain. If you need to stop for a quick bite while you are walking about you should try the brightly coloured vans which sell slices of pizza and panini and drinks. They are good value and you can save your evening meal to relax.

I also loved Castell Gandolfo as this was the backdrop to one of my favourite operas , ‘Tosca’. Another favourite was the Villa Borghese , the paintings and the sculptures were amazing but you must book well in advance and take your passport to get the audio guide. I would certainly not want to miss the Pantheon which was a Roman temple later becoming a Christian Church. Don’t be put off by the ugly exterior the inside is amazing with the huge dome and the tomb of Raphael. There are no windows, the only light is from the hole high up in the centre of the dome.

I enjoyed the outside places too. The Forum, The iconic Colosseum, Trajan’s Market (probably the first shopping mall) and of course all the Piazzas.

After all this there is the shopping and eating to fit in. One of my best half hours was sitting in the Piazza Navona by Bernini’s wonderful fountain, drinking coffee and eating a cannoli.

Remember to throw a coin over your shoulder into the Trevi Fountain, as you will certainly want to return.

The Hotels I’ve Inhabited - The Good, The Bad, The Quirky

Being a family man and a salesman at the same time can be enormously challenging. My family comes first, but I can’t support them without travelling. My wife isn’t happy about it, but she wouldn’t be happy about being broke, either. She constantly says I should find a sales position in my field locally. To be honest, she has a point. It’s just that we’d be losing about $15,000 of income per year, and that’s not a situation we can currently afford. Well, enough about my problems (for now). What I’d like to go over are a few of the hotels I’ve been to around the country. To keep things simple, I have only included three of them: the best, the worst, and the quirkiest.

I’ll stick with the whole ‘save the best for last’ theme and begin with the worst. Unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to disclose the exact location of this hotel because my friend is a high up for this chain — Comfort Inn — and gets me discounts all the time. I realize I already gave up the name, but not the location. Without getting into further details, it makes a difference. All I’ll say is that it’s located outside a medium-sized city in the south.

Where should I begin with this Comfort Inn in the south? Should it be that the man behind the counter talked to his friend on his cell phone for ten minutes while I waited? Maybe it should be the television that only operates at extremely high or low volumes? How about the opened and used soap on the bathroom counter? The papers left in the drawer from the last visitor indicating the room was never fully clean. If that’s not bad enough, how does being able to feel hundreds of bedbugs crawl up and down your legs when you’re under the covers sound? Yes, I ended up sleeping above the covers (with all my clothes on). If that’s not enough, when I went to get fries at McDonalds across the street, I found police cars surrounding the place. There had been a robbery only a few minutes earlier. I retreated to the hotel, hoping I could go for a swim or workout to eliminate the stress. No pool. No gym. I spent the remainder of the evening listening to a man and woman argue and make some other unique sounds from the next room as I tried to sleep. Needless to say, I will never return to this particular hotel.

The quirkiest place I’ve ever stayed was the Red Lion Hotel in San Diego. It seemed like whoever designed the hotel suffered from multiple personality disorder. I could only imagine what was going through the architect’s head: Upscale. No, let’s go for value over here. Modern downstairs? Okay. Then let’s go country upstairs. Okay, it wasn’t that extreme, but you get the idea. One of the first things that stood out about the place was an upscale Asian-style restaurant being only a few feet from an American sports bar. The people in the Asian restaurant wanting to enjoy a quiet meal could hear the shouts from the sports bar. The second thing that stood out was that there were only balconies on rooms facing the highway and parking lot, but none on the rooms facing the pool. When I got to the pool, I noticed that you had to walk nearly 100 yards from the pool to the hot tub. Not so much fun when it’s barely above 70 degrees. Oh, and the gym was about the size of a large walk-in closet. All that said, I loved the place! There was just something charming and friendly about it. The food was terrific and so was the convenient location. I’d go back in a heartbeat.

The best hotel I’ve ever stayed it is actually a Homewood Suites. It was in Bethlehem, PA. I had just had a big argument with my wife and I was really wound up. To make matters worse, it was snowing, so travelling wasn’t much fun. Well, from the second I walked into that place, things began to turn around for the better. I hit the pool and Jacuzzi area right away. It was far from the most extravagant place on Earth, but with no one else in there — something you can’t find at hotels in major cities — and the snow falling on the ground just outside the windows, it was truly serene. The location was very convenient. My business needs were minutes away and I made a mental note to come back with the family so we could go to Dorney Park. Seeing all the farms and beautiful country while driving from the airport was an added bonus.

Good hotels, bad hotels, quirky hotels – in the end, I love them all. Why? Because they offer different experiences. They’re also my homes away from home. I’m glad I got to write about them.

My Ramble In The Sarawak Jungle.

I was visiting Kuching, the capital of Sarawak and I mainly wanted to see the orang-utans, but I also wanted more out of my world adventure travel. I looked around on the Internet and saw one or two interesting options. One was a visit to caves and one of the caves had quite a colony of bats, the other was a hike in the jungle.

The latter sounded very appealing as I like to walk and the idea of walking in the jungle fired my imagination.

I was able to organise the hike easily once I was in Kuching and although there were a couple of options the one that I liked the sound of was a visit to Baku National Park.

The Park is reached only by boat.

I am not a lover of boat travel so this was a bit off putting and when I saw the boat it didn’t fill me with confidence. I needn’t have worried I had a pleasant, short sail over a bay which is part of the South China Sea and then I had to get out and wade ashore.

It was a fun way to start the day.

A guide travelled in the boat with me. He had lived in a village near the boat jetty all his life so knew the park well. He was very informative and was obviously attuned to the jungle sounds. He knew when to stop and look for a proboscis monkey which is just about the most famous of the jungle’s inhabitants. It was very exciting to see them in their natural habitat.

As you would expect it was very hot and humid and although the hike was only a couple of hours or so some people we met on the trail had to turn back.

I was making my way to a secludes bay through the jungle and the track had not been made tourist friendly, thank goodness, so obviously it wasn’t flat or smooth.

Along the way my guide pointed out various small mammals, lizards etc and insects some, which could give nasty stings or bites.

I also saw some wild boar near the canteen where we had lunch. I also saw pitcher plants and the huge lengths of rattan hanging from the trees, which of course is used to make baskets, furniture and even used in house building.

I walked on bridges over mangrove swamps and saw some of the extraordinary wildlife unique to this environment.

It was lovely to reach the beach where we could sit and relax before our return hike.

It was just what you would expect if you were thinking of having a visit Malaysia travel experience.

The South China Sea was gently lapping on the shore, wonderful rock shapes and all fringed by the jungle.

All in all in was a day to remember. I will just add a coupe of practical tips.

I was prepared to pay for a taxi to the ferry, a guide to meet us and be my guide for the day.

You don’t have to do this, you can just turn up at the ferry, and you can get there by bus, and ask to join a boat going over.

Either way it will be a day you won’t forget.
